Intro to Channeling

A structured drill to promote good channeling technique.

Setup

Layout a line of marker discs, or cones, about 20m long with two gaps at about 10m and 15m. Attacker passes the ball to a defender, who passes it back to start the drill. Attacker carries the ball along the outside of the cones and is only able to go towards goal through a gap in the cones, or around the end of the cones. The defender "shadows" the attacker along the cones and makes the gaps as uninviting as possible. If the attacker comes through a gap then the defender makes a tackle.

Objective & Coaching Points

The objective is to get the defender to channel the attacker without needing to dive into an immediate tackle. Their body position and awareness will determine if the attacker feels able to come through a gap. If the attacker is able to beat the defender then help the defender work out how it happened and how to position themself next time.

Extension & Progression

Remove some cones to make the gaps bigger, or add another gap.
